Last year, a group of guys got together in North Wales for a walking holiday. We rented a house and made two brilliant walks in Snowdonia National Park. Fantastic time with great swimming in mountain lakes!

When we were planning this year’s walking holiday, we decided to climb two peaks in Snowdonia (Cnicht and Moel Hebog) and make it a sponsored “mountain challenge” for the World Peace Flame Foundation. One of the guys in our walking group is Adrian Elson, whose wife Chantal is climbing 150 monroes in Scotland for the World Peace Flame Foundation’s free medical camps.

So taking to heart Chantal’s example and inspiration, we thought we, too, could raise funds for free cataract operations in India, and give people the gift of sight!

Now, with two weeks to go, all the guys in our walking group are finding ways to fund-raise from asking our colleagues at work, friends on Facebook, families at home, students in our classes, or clients in our practices.

We have two weeks to go and another £1000 to raise, so if anyone out there can help support, that would be awesome! Thank you!!

Can you imagine climbing 150 mountains over 3000ft high in one year? This is the challenge Chantal Elson from Congleton in Cheshire is taking up to raise awareness and funds for the World Peace Flame Charity, which provides free medical care for hundreds of villages in remote areas of India.

The Munros are all mountains in the Scottish Highlands over 3000ft high.

So, Chantal, why Scotland, and why the Munros?

“My first encounter with the Munros was in 2003 when my husband, Adrian, introduced me to these isolated Scottish mountains. What a wet, wild and windy place they can be! Gradually I learnt to love it, because in this remote wilderness you don’t just meet the mountain – you also meet yourself.

I often find myself climbing through the cold, wet or snowy weather; extra-cautious of the conditions underfoot, the terrain and the ever-changing weather conditions; but the breathtaking views, the total emptiness and the exhilaration I feel on reaching the top are all part of that magic that somehow inspires me to go on.”

Is there a reason why you have chosen to raise funds for the Medical Camps?

“On my climbs, I have come to realise the importance of my eyesight – it enables me to experience the magic of the Munros. This is what motivates me to raise funds for the India Medical Camps. I hope that, through my sponsored climbs, others may also come to see the beauty of the world around them.

Our eyesight has such an impact upon our everyday life. It can determine verything – from the extent to which we can work and earn our livelihood, to how we walk, talk and communicate with everyone around us.

In India, Dru and the World Peace Flame have established a project whereby local health professionals offer free and subsidised medical care, including cataract operations. They need our help to provide medicines and to cover basic surgery costs. Did you know, for example, that it only costs £25 for a cataract operation to give someone their sight back?”

What is your goal for the Munro Challenge?

“My aim is to raise £25 per mountain (£3,750) to give 150 people the opportunity for cataract operations to regain their eyesight. If I can help those 150 people regain their sight, I believe I will be giving them and their families, friends and communities a much brighter future.”

Chantal, although small in stature, has a huge determination to raise funds for this worthy cause.

If you would like any further information or to support Chantal in her challenge, please get in touch with her by phone on +44 1260 272449 or email chantal.
